Gordon Macklin, a Bethesda resident, served as president of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc.(1970-1987) and oversaw the creation of the NASDAQ stock exchange. He was chairman of Hambrecht & Quist, Inc., a San Francisco-based investment banking and venture capital firm, from 1987-1992; and chairman of White River Corporation, a financial investment firm, from 1993-1998. Macklin is either on the board of directors, trustees, or is a managing general partner of 47 investment companies in the Franklin/Templeton Group. He serves as a director of Martek Biosciences Corp., NeuralStem Biopharmaceuticals Corp., MedImmune Inc., Overstock.com, and Spacehab Inc. In 1999 the Macklins decided to donate more than $1.3 million in stock to start the Gordon and Marilyn Macklin Business Institute at Montgomery College, an honors and mentoring program for sophomores
