Welcome to the Division of Cancer Biology (DCB) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). DCB was created by the reorganization of NCI in 1995, and has the principal Federal responsibility for managing a grant- and contract-supported program of basic and applied research on cancer cell biology, including research on carcinogenesis and cancer immunology. In addition to investigating basic cellular mechanisms, this research includes examination of the role of biological, chemical, and physical agents in the initiation, promotion or inhibition of cancer and the biological and health effects of exposures to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
The staff of DCB is dedicated to working with the scientific community in the pursuit of knowledge and discovery about the biology of cancer and encourages researchers to consult the staff to learn more about available opportunities for research support and to discuss strategies for successful grant competition. We can assist qualified individuals in locating needed resources or collaborators, and are interested in assisting investigators in obtaining NIH research support which will in turn strengthen our national effort to fight cancer.
PROGRESS REPORT REMINDER: NIH no longer mails pre-printed face pages for progress reports. Beginning with non-competing renewal start dates of December 2002 and beyond, grantees will need to access an NIH Office of Extramural Research website to determine which progress reports are due. Progress reports for grants funded by NCI should be sent to:
The Activities to Promote Research Collaborations (APRC) initiative provides limited supplemental support to current DCB-funded investigators for meetings/workshops or grant-related research activities to establish focused scientific research collaboration in novel and promising areas related to the parent grant. Information about this initiative can be found at http://www3.cancer.gov/dcb/APRC2003.htm or contact your DCB Program Director. The deadlines for submitting supplement applications are December 16th and April 15th.
The Division of Cancer Biology, NCI is participating in 5 new Initiatives: PA03-008 Bone Anabolic Hormones, Their Receptors and Signal Transduction Pathways, PA-02-116 Age-Related Prostate Growth: Biologic Mechanisms, CA-03-013 Molecular Interaction Between Tumor Cells and Bone (receipt date: November 21, 2002), PA-02-100 Complex Formation in Hormonal Regulation of Gene Expression and PA-02-013,
Pilot and Feasibility Program in Urology (active through October 1, 2004).
Future meetings: DCB program staff will be attending a number of meetings in 2002 and will make time available between attendance at scientific sessions to meet with grantees and potential applicants. Specific meetings will be listed here as plans are made.
