Luigi M. De Luca was born February 25, 1941, in Maglie (Lecce), Italy. He was graduated from the Collegio Capece of Maglie in 1959 and received his doctorate in 1964 from the Institute of Biological Chemistry, University of Pavia, Italy. From 1964 to 1965, he was Director of the Clinical Laboratory at the Institute for Tuberculosis Research, Ospedale Maggiore, Milan and Guest at the Institute of Biological Chemistry, University of Pavia. In 1965 he was appointed Research Associate and in 1969 Instructor in the Department of Nutrition and and Food Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. In 1971 he became a research chemist in the Lung Cancer Branch of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, followed by appointment as Head of the Differentiation Control Section of that Branch and subsequently the Laboratory of Experimental Pathology and the Laboratory of Cellular Carcinogenesis and Tumor Promotion. He is a member of the Society for Complex Carbohydrates, the American Institute for Nutrition, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Federation of American Scientists, the American Society of Cell Biologists, and the American Association for Cancer Research. He received the Collegio Cairoli Scholarship as an undergraduate and the University of Pavia Scholarship as a graduate student. He has been a Visiting Professor, Department of Nutrition, University of Tokyo (l976), Visiting Professor, Golgi Institute of Pathology, University of Pavia, Italy (1988), Visiting Professor, Department of Histology and General Embryology, University of Rome, Italy (1993), Visiting Professor, First Department of Medicine, Gifu, Japan (1993), Visiting Professor, Institute for Nutrition Research, University of Oslo, Norway (1993), Visiting Professor, Department of Histology and General Embryology, University of Rome, La Sapienza, Rome, Italy (1994), and Visiting Professor, Department of Biology and Molecular Pathology, University of Naples, Naples, Italy (1994). He received the Mead-Johnson Award for research in Nutrition from the American Institute of Nutrition in 1978. He was President of the NCI Assembly of Scientists (1982) and was a Rockefeller Foundation Scholar, Bellagio, Italy (1988). Dr. De Luca is author or coauthor of more than 140 scientific publications.
