SUMMARY OF ACTION ITEMS - DEFINING NCI's ROLE

Three subcommittees were formed to carry out various action items:

  1. Standard Reagents Subcommittee: Drs. Strausberg (contact), Brown, M. Showe, Staudt, and Weinstein. This group will give recommendations to NCI about what cell lines and RNAs should be used as controls, and determine the mechanism for their production and distribution. Sue Waldrop's office will set up an Internet site for communication with other workshop attendees. In the future, this group might consider, defining and distributing oligos for use in microarrays.
  2. Informatics Subcommittee: Drs. Buetow (contact), Eisen, Friend, Masys and Rifkin. This group will develop a website for the sharing and distribution of protocols and software (immediate goal), and establish a data repository. The group will also work on data format issues, defining XML specifications, and communicating these specifications to other groups working on Gene Expression Markup Languages.
  3. Gene Expression Analysis Workshop Subcommittee: Drs. Simon (contact), Kardia, Lander, Staudt, Tibshrani, and Willey. Additional volunteers: Drs. Brown, Eisen, Liu, Poggio, Taylor, and Weinstein. This group is charged with writing two review articles, addressing unresolved issues with respect to experimental platforms and analytic methods. The group is to use these reviews to inform the selection of problem sets which will be distributed to participants associated with the Director's Challenge for analysis, and then discussed at the Gene Expression Analysis Workshop, tentatively scheduled for winter 2001.
